    Grants & Funding

    1. 2022 USDA Farm to School Grant Program Request for Applications (RFA)
    Deadline: January 10, 2022
    2022 Farm to School Grant Program Request for Applications (RFA) is now available! FNS seeks to award up to $12 million this fiscal year. Eligible schools, institutions operating the Child and Adult Care Food Program and Summer Food Service Program, State and local agencies, Indian Tribal Organizations, small- to medium-sized agricultural producers or groups of small- to medium-sized agricultural producers, and non-profit organizations are eligible for Farm to School grants. Priority scoring incentives return for applicants who meet certain criteria, including new priority consideration for organizations led by Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) and serving BIPOC communities, and organizations located in and serving rural areas. Please see the RFA for full details. The Office of Community Food Systems will host webinars  Monday, November 8th, 2021 and Tuesday, November 9th, 2021, each at 2:30pm ET, to help interested applicants learn more about the RFA and put together a grant package, respectively. A Frequently Asked Questions document will also be available through the Farm to School Grant Applicant Resources Page of the FNS website. 

    2. RWJF's Evidence for Action: Investigator-Initiated Research to Build a Culture of Health
    This program funds research that expands the evidence needed to build a Culture of Health, which is broadly defined as one in which good health and well-being flourish across geographic, demographic, and social sectors; public and private decision making is guided by the goal of fostering equitable communities; and everyone has the opportunity to make choices that lead to healthy lifestyles. Proposals are accepted on a rolling basis. Learn more.

    3. Hardship Assistance Grants for Organic Producers – Deadline November 5, 2021
    Deadline: November 5
    Do you know an organic farmer, rancher, or food processor who has experienced hardship over the past year? The CCOF Foundation Bricmont Hardship Assistance Fund provides direct financial assistance to organic producers who suffer financial losses due to extreme hardship, including COVID-19 pandemic related hardships. Applications are available in English and Spanish. Award amounts range from $1,000-$2,500. Learn more.

    4. Pandemic Response and Safety Grants
    Deadline: November 22
    USDA is seeking applications to support agricultural stakeholders who haven’t yet received substantial federal financial assistance to respond to the COVID-19 crisis. The program will help small businesses in certain commodity areas including small specialty crop and aquaculture producers, food processors and distributors, and farmers markets. Small businesses and nonprofits can apply for a grant to cover COVID-related expenses such as workplace safety measures, retrofitting facilities, shifting to online sales platforms, transportation, worker housing, and medical costs. The funding request can range from $1,500 to $20,000.  Learn more.

    5. Seafood Processors Pandemic Response and Safety (SPRS) Block Grant Program
    Deadline: November 22
    The Seafood Processors Pandemic Response and Safety (SPRS) Block Grant Program provides grants to eligible state agencies and territories to support seafood processors, including at-sea processing vessels, to respond to coronavirus, including for measures to protect workers against COVID-19. State agencies within select coastal States and American Samoa are eligible to apply directly to the U.S. Department of Agriculture for grant funds. Seafood processors interested in the SPRS should contact their state agency for more information. Learn more.

    6. America’s Healthy Food Financing Initiative Targeted Small Grants Program (HFFI TSG Program)
    LOI Deadline: December 7
    In 2021, America's Healthy Foods Financing Initiative is offering funding through a Targeted Small Grants Program (TSG Program). At least $4 million is available for grants for innovative fresh food retail and food system enterprises that seek to improve access to healthy food in underserved areas. More information about the program, including eligibility criteria, is described in the Request for Applications (RFA). The RFA explains the process for applying to this grant, and lists all of the application questions applicants will need to answer. Read more.

    7. One Earth Award Student Scholarships
    Regional deadlines vary and are as early as December 1
    The One Earth Award offers $1,000 scholarships for four students whose works address climate change. All students in grades 7–12 (ages 13 and up) are eligible to participate and should apply through the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. Teens can visit artandwriting.org/one-earth to find out their regional deadlines and how to apply.

     

    8. 2022 Youth Garden Grant
    Deadline: December 17
    A total of 50 programs will be awarded Youth Garden Grants in 2022. All winning programs will receive a check for $250, and materials to grow their garden program. Forty programs will receive packages worth $1,050, five programs will receive the base package plus a $1,000 tool grant from Corona Tools, and five programs will receive the base package plus two Garden Towers from Garden Tower Project! Any nonprofit organization, public or private school, or youth program in the United States or US Territories planning a new garden program or expanding an established one that serves at least 15 youth between the ages of 3 and 18 is eligible to apply. Learn more.

    Opportunity for Florida educators and students to creatively engage in global sustainability issues.
    *New this year: Video Project Organizer provides scaffolding for students

    The World of 7 Billion video contest is back for the 2021-2022 school year. This year's contest topic asks students to: Explain how population growth impacts one of the following global challenges and offer an idea for a sustainable solution. The global challenges are: agriculture & food, urbanization, or ocean health.

    The contest is currently open and the deadline for video submissions is February 22, 2022.  Participating teachers receive free curriculum resources from Population Education, and over 80 cash prizes of up to $1,200 will be awarded to student winners.

    Many EE educators successfully assign the contest as a fun and meaningful small-group project. Use the provided lesson plan and give students the scaffolded Video Project Organizer to optimize student learning. Videos are being accepted now through February 22, 2022.

    This is a scientific and public-facing position to facilitate volunteer and citizen science engagement while leading conservation-based projects for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

    This position provides direct volunteer coordination for conservation projects (including citizen science projects), geared toward, but not limited to, upland terrestrial habitat and species, imperiled species, nonnative and conflict species in the FWC’s Northeast Region. The Regional Volunteer Program Biologist position is stationed at the Northeast Region Office in Ocala, FL. The coordinator will design, plan, implement and monitor conservation projects that use volunteers; recruit, train, and manage volunteers for these projects; and provide volunteer management support and citizen science best practices to FWC’s land managers and biologists. The coordinator will also network with external agencies to establish partnerships to assist with implementing conservation and citizen science projects that use volunteers on public and private lands.

    This is an exciting opportunity for an outgoing, self-motivated individual with a commitment to conservation. The successful candidate will have excellent organizational, leadership, community development, project design, and communication skills; and will demonstrate dedication to the FWC’s mission and conservation of Florida’s fish, wildlife and habitat resources. Broad-based working knowledge of local ecology and a variety of Florida’s non-game species across multiple taxa is preferred.

My goal is to garner insights for classroom teachers, administrators, citizen science developers or organizations, and potential partners, such as colleges or universities seeking a deeper understanding of the citizen science teaching and learning process.
