Job Description:

The Marine Discovery Center is a non-profit education facility located in beautiful New Smyrna Beach on the East Coast of Florida.  We will be running summer adventure camps from June 7-August 17 this year.  We are now accepting applications for our lead summer camp counselor for children ages 4-9. The Lead Camp Instructor will utilize the classroom, kayaks, a boat and the outdoor environment to teach a hands-on, feet-wet summer camp curriculum. 

Under supervision of the Education Staff the Lead Camp Instructor will:

Ensure that health, happiness and safety are top priorities at all times.

Lead activities, games, arts and crafts, and songs.

Provide an understanding of marine topics.

Oversee all campers.

Set-up and breakdown all activities.

Keep inventory of supplies up to date.

Organize educational and recreational activities.

Meet and greet parents/guardians and participants at check-in and check-out each day.

Be prepared to get wet and muddy in the field.

B.A. or B.S. in Environmental Science, Biology or Education degree preferred.  A background in K-12 education in either a classroom or an informal environmental education setting is desirable.  Computer literate in Microsoft Office.

CPR and First Aid certification needed.  A prerequisite to employment will be a criminal background check per the Volusia County School Board Jessica Lunsford Act.

National Wildlife Control Operators Association (NWCOA) represents wildlife control operators around our country and provides its members top-level training and continuing education courses recognized by state regulators.

As we begin to slowly move on from COVID cancellations and closures, we would like to offer our members a much-needed Venomous Snake Safety Course on July 14 and 15 around the Orlando/ Kissimmee area, if possible. 

Our course would likely be 1-2 days and may benefit from 2 classrooms (for 2 concurrent courses with 17 people each) if possible. One classroom will be sufficient if that's all that's available. (The number of classrooms and participants will be better known once we begin advertising for this. We believe we may have to cap the number of spaces for this given perceived interests.) The training course consists of a half-day of classroom (i.e., PowerPoint and discussion) instruction before a half-day of live snake practice. FWC has indicated their willingness to assist in providing live snakes for this portion. All techniques are very low risk, as this is an introductory course. My team consists of two highly qualified instructors to maintain safety for participants and snakes at all times. 

Please share this inquiry with partners who might be willing to help us out with a venue. We're happy to make donations (financial or training services) to partnering institutions. We're striving to keep costs low for our members and NWCOA.

South Carolina would LOVE for some of you to share your knowledge and passion with educators in our state during our 2021 virtual conference on Friday, June 11, 2021. The conference theme is "Environmental Legacy: It's Our Story. Past, Present, and Future." We are especially keen to host speakers on topics of justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion (JEDI), although we will consider proposals related to all themes of EE! We are scheduling sessions in half-hour blocks, so we're looking for presentations about 20 minutes in length with 5 minutes for Q&A and 5 minutes for intro/outro/sponsor remarks.

Everglades Environmental Education Internship

Internship Description

Grassy Waters Preserve is dedicated to creating dynamic environmental education experiences that connect residents with the pristine natural environment that serves as their water supply, and instilling visitors of all ages with the knowledge and motivation to act as stewards of this important Everglades ecosystem. To address this mission, this paid internship focuses on teaching students for 8 weeks. The intern will receive certifications for environmental education and will work closely with Grassy Waters Preserve staff in the following activities: https://www.wpb.org/government/public-utilities/grassy-waters-preserve/school-programs/program-descriptions.

Depending on COVID-19 protocols this summer, interns will either do the activities above in person with campers or through live streaming field trip programs where they interact with the campers virtually.  Interns will also create virtual educational resources to share with campers and students, which are dependent on the interest and skill set of the interns selected. Qualifications

Please contact Mary Crider at mcrider@wpb.org for an application. Below are the qualifications and requirements for this college internship:
• Grade point average greater than 3.0
• Must be in college, Graduate or Undergraduate status or recent graduate, specifically class of December 2020/May 2021
• Once the program begins, interns are expected to complete the entire 8-week program. Interns are expected to work 32 hours a week, partially on site at Grassy Waters Preserve for field trips & trainings and virtually for all other dates. The days of the week that the interns work at the Preserve can be flexible to accommodate classes or another job. However, interns are expected to take part in all camp field trips covered by the Kate Svitek Grant. Dates for these field trips will be given ahead of time.
• The program involves rigorous field work in the South Florida Everglades ecosystem during the hottest and rainiest time of year.
• Interns are paid a stipend of $2,000.
• Room and board is the responsibility of the intern, although some assistance in locating housing can be expected from Grassy Waters Preserve. Contact mcrider@wpb.org
