How to Start a Successful Green Business

More and more entrepreneurs are becoming conscious of the environment and climate. While this is a positive sign, there’s still much more work to be done. It’s essential that we do what we can now to create a healthier, more stable planet for future generations.

If you’re a business-minded person who wants to contribute to the betterment of our world, there’s no better option than to become an ecopreneur. In essence, an ecopreneur is someone who sells eco-friendly products or services and considers the environment in every aspect of their company’s operations. Below, Joyce Wilson has shared some practical tips and resources for how you can start a green business that succeeds long-term.

Learn the “Triple Bottom Line”

Ecopreneurs follow the “triple bottom line” method when it comes to measuring success.

  • The social bottom line measures how well your company is benefiting community members and the community as a whole

  • The environmental bottom line refers to how much your company is reducing its ecological and carbon footprints.

  • And of course, the financial bottom line tells you how profitable your business is or when it will be profitable.

Pursue Green Operations

Running a green business is more than selling eco-conscious products or services. Explore every aspect of your operations to see if there are changes you can make that will boost sustainability.

  • Make sure your overarching business model is sustainable.

  • Reduce waste whenever and wherever possible.

  • Get as many of your products and materials as possible from local sources.

  • Donate to nonprofits and charities (e.g., local, national, international, etc.) that share your concerns for the planet.

Earn Your Brand

Earning credibility and promoting your brand will be essential to your goal of becoming a successful ecopreneur.

  • Make sure you have the right business structure established and/or file a DBA

  • Get your products certified by a third-party environmental organization.

  • Post regular blogs about your company’s vision, goals, and practical steps you are making for the environment.

  • Engage on social media to share your progress with your audience and answer any questions or concerns.

Being an ecopreneur is an excellent way to lead a fulfilling career while fostering the health of our planet. Along with considering the tips above, keep researching how you can build a green business that stands the test of time!
