    On March 7th, 2020, Will Freund will set out on the climate awareness project, Climate, Kayak, and Conversation. He will be kayaking from Miami, Florida to Norfolk, Virginia along the Intracoastal Waterway. The mission of this project is to record the stories of those in coastal communities on the charges they have witnessed in their lifetime. These will be recorded interviews that will be edited into a documentary format at the conclusion of the project this summer.


    Will will be making his way through the Florida region between March 7th and mid-April along with many other boaters in the Intracoastal Waterway community. From January 31st through February 4th, he will be doing a practice run from Tampa to Sarasota.

    On June 25-26, 2020, Saint Leo University in Saint Leo, Florida will host a Sustainability conference that aims to bring together numerous college and university constituencies – faculty, staff, administrators, students – to share ideas, successes, challenges, and best practices for infusing sustainability-related ideas into the curriculum and incorporating sustainability initiatives into established institutional infrastructures.


    The conference committee is interested in panels, papers, and workshops that allow faculty in higher education, K-12, and community education to exchange practical hands-on methods of integrating sustainability lessons into existing courses. For public or private school teachers this conference presents an excellent opportunity to earn CEUs. Student panels and student-faculty papers are also welcome. Administrators, Plant Operation Directors, and Student Services personnel are also invited to share their knowledge and tips, as well as the challenges they face in infusing sustainable practices into their organizations, actions, and events.     Students are inviting their local communities to "Go Green and Think Blue" by joining them in the annual Students for Zero Waste Week campaign. During this campaign, students focus on reducing land-based waste in order to protect the health of local marine environments. These young leaders are raising awareness of how single-use plastic and other types of litter affect the health of local watersheds, national marine sanctuaries, and the ocean. In addition, some schools are looking at ways to reduce their energy use on campus with hopes of raising awareness of how the burning of fossil fuels also impacts the health of the ocean.

    Organizations seeking funding for projects that educate students about the source of their food, fiber, forest, flowers and fuel are in luck. Florida Agriculture in the Classroom will be offering 2020 Volunteer Grants to pay for agriculture-related projects that reach students in pre-Kindergarten through 12th grade in the spring.


    Farm Bureaus, Extension Offices, non-profit organizations and governmental agencies are eligible. Grant applications are due Friday, March 13, 2020.

    Teachers throughout Florida have received in-service credits from their school districts for continuing education requirements by taking Florida Master Naturalist Program (FMNP) classes. FMNP Core Module classes are 40 contact hours each. A total of 120 credits could be obtained by taking all three modules. The FMNP curriculum supplements the Florida Sunshine State Standards and student workbooks and other materials can be used in the classroom. In addition, FMNP videos can be purchased for use in the classroom. Student final projects can be incorporated into school curriculum and other educational programs.

    Children are the foundation of the United States, and supporting them is a key component of building a successful future. However, millions of children face health inequities that compromise their development, well-being, and long-term outcomes, despite substantial scientific evidence about how those adversities contribute to poor health. Advancements in neurobiological and socio-behavioral science show that critical biological systems develop in the prenatal through early childhood periods, and neurobiological development is extremely responsive to environmental influences during these stages. Consequently, social, economic, cultural, and environmental factors significantly affect a child’s health ecosystem and ability to thrive throughout adulthood.

    The Environmental Fellows Program (EFP) at the University of Michigan (U of M) School for Environment and Sustainability (SEAS), in partnership with the Environmental Grantmakers Association (EGA), is a 12-week summer fellowship opportunity that seeks to diversify the environmental field by cultivating the career aspirations of master’s and doctoral students from historically underrepresented groups by connecting students to work opportunities in environmental nonprofits, grant makers, and government sectors.     The purpose of this program is to support research, education/teaching, and extension projects that increase participation by women and underrepresented minorities from rural areas in STEM. NIFA intends this program to address educational needs within broadly defined areas of food, agriculture, natural resources, and human (FANH) sciences. Applications recommended for funding must highlight and emphasize the development of a competent and qualified workforce in the FAHN sciences. WAMS-funded projects improve the economic health and viability of rural communities by developing research and extension initiatives that focus on new and emerging employment opportunities in STEM occupations. Projects that contribute to the economic viability of rural communities are also encouraged.

    Healthy mental, emotional, and behavioral (MEB) development is a critical foundation for a productive adulthood. Much is known about strategies to support families and communities in strengthening the MEB development of children and youth, by promoting healthy development and also by preventing and mitigating disorder, so that young people reach adulthood ready to thrive and contribute to society. Over the last decade, a growing body of research has significantly strengthened understanding of healthy MEB development and the factors that influence it, as well as how it can be fostered. Yet, the United States has not taken full advantage of this growing knowledge base. Ten years later, the nation still is not effectively mitigating risks for poor MEB health outcomes; these risks remain prevalent, and available data show no significant reductions in their prevalence.
